As we strive to create a cohesive and supportive learning environment for all students, we are excited to announce the introduction of Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) in our middle and high school buildings. This initiative aligns with the PBIS framework already in place at our elementary schools, ensuring a consistent approach to behavioral expectations across all grade levels.

PBIS is a proactive approach to establishing the behavioral supports and social culture needed for all students in a school to achieve social, emotional, and academic success. By emphasizing positive reinforcement, PBIS encourages students to engage in responsible, respectful, and safe behavior. This framework provides a structured and supportive environment, making it easier for students to understand and meet behavioral expectations. PBIS reinforces the intrinsic motivation to be the best version of themselves in the maturation process.

The PBIS framework in our middle and high schools will center around three core expectations: Responsible, Respectful, and Safe. These expectations are designed to create a positive and productive school climate where students can thrive both academically and socially.

Responsible

Students are expected to take ownership of their actions and decisions. This includes being prepared for class, completing assignments on time, and taking responsibility for their own learning and behavior. By fostering a sense of accountability, we aim to help students develop essential life skills that will benefit them beyond the classroom and be lifelong learners striving for daily educational excellence.

Respectful

Respect is the foundation of a positive school environment. Students are encouraged to show respect for themselves, their peers, their teachers, and their environment. This means listening actively, valuing others' opinions, and treating everyone with kindness and consideration. Respectful behavior enhances collaboration and creates a supportive community where everyone feels cared for and belong with other like-minded individuals.

Safe

Ensuring a safe learning environment is crucial for student success. This includes both physical and emotional safety. Students are expected to follow safety guidelines, be aware of their surroundings, and contribute to a climate where everyone feels secure and supported. A safe environment allows students to focus on their studies without fear or distraction.

Believe it or not, I am starting my 25th year at Benton Community. Every day I find joy in working with a great staff, students and parents that make Benton Community a great place to be
