Emily DeNeve, Interventionist, Norway Intermediate
The vast majority of sixth grade students who qualified for ELO (Extended Learning Opportunities) have a deep interest in all things engineering. Because of this interest, our class welcomes Dalton Jacobs, Collins Aerospace engineer, into our classroom once a week. He brings his expertise in all things engineering to build scale model homes students will enter into the Build Iowa’s Future design contest in May.
Students have truly outdone themselves with the creativity displayed in their homes. They have: built a functional windmill, constructed working garage doors, thoughtfully planned their home’s interior design, and explored various careers such as architectural drafters, landscapers, and civil engineers while writing their required essays. Overall, though, the most beautiful piece about this project is the link Dalton brings. These students get a peek into the career field they aspire to pursue by collaborating with a community member living out their future dreams.
