Anna Zittergruen, 8th Grade Social Studies Teacher
Do you know why we have Polk County? Or who Kirkwood Community College is named after? What about why the capital moved from Iowa City to Des Moines?
Although small details, these are just a few of the many fascinating and cool things about our great state. During 8th Grade Social Studies we learn a lot about the United States from the very beginning of humans first arriving on our continent to the Civil War. During each unit we also spend time discussing Iowa history and how our state played a role in big moments during our nation’s history.
From learning about the Effigy Mounds in Northeast Iowa, to Samuel Kirkwood’s role during the Civil war, and lots more in between, I hope 8th graders find a lot of pride and knowledge about their home state over the course of the semester.
