This year’s 4th graders may not have been on the ballot this election, but watch for their names in a few years!  Currently, 4th graders are learning all about the government, the various branches, and the services it provides in a cross-curricular literacy and social studies unit.

During this unit, students learned about the importance of electing officials, who in turn write laws that benefit our society.  Then, it was our turn!  After a few quick reminders that laws are meant to better society or make it safer for all- hence, naps for everyone every day is not technically the best law, although certainly popular! - students were up to the challenge.

Lots of great ideas were tossed around, from local laws all the way to national laws. Students were all set to create laws that limit the price of fruits and vegetables while making candy more expensive and also created laws that required the use of windmills and solar energy from factories. And yes, one law was written regarding naps daily, but with the voice of a persuasive lawmaker- naps for those students who have to get up for early bus rides- spoken as only a student from Benton Community can truly understand!
