Jolly Phonics is one of the curriculums that we use in preschool to teach letter recognition and letter sounds. It is based out of England, so some of the stories and characters are a little foreign to us, for example, a dancer playing castanets is what they use to teach the C and K sound. Although many preschoolers have never seen or heard of castanets, they do enjoy acting out the actions and producing the sound. It also makes it more memorable for them if they have an action and a sound to connect to the letter.
Recently, we were learning the sound for letter Ee. The song that went along with the letter was called, The Egg. Trying to make it as memorable as possible and wanting students to recognize the letter Ee and its sound, we decided to crack eggs ourselves!!! (Also our fine motor work for the day) So each student, with help from Mrs. Kaestner, Ms. Stefanie, and Ms. Cassidi, cracked their own egg into a muffin tin! Surprisingly, it went very well! Then we baked the eggs and tried them with a little toast. As you can see some kids liked their work…..and some did not!
