Year two of the apprenticeship program has brought new experiences as I moved between Atkins Elementary and Norway Intermediate this fall, completing 40 practicum hours in Mrs. Braley’s fourth-grade classroom. What I have learned in my years as a paraeducator, along with my classes, was put into action. I enjoyed ten weeks of observing and teaching whole and small-group math, language arts, science, and social studies lessons while being part of a new grade-level team and building relationships with a new class.
With this experience, I got to know, work with, and learn from the staff and students in a different building. Being part of the classroom lessons and learning from Mrs. Braley and the fourth-grade team was invaluable as I move into student teaching this spring. In true Benton spirit, the staff in both buildings were supportive and inclusive, allowing me time to learn and grow. The biggest takeaway from my practicum hours was how lucky I am to work and eventually teach at Benton Community. I have already started planning and look forward to student teaching in Atkins beginning in January.
