Building strong relationships with students at the beginning of the school year is essential for teachers. When students feel seen, heard, and valued by their teachers, they’re more likely to feel comfortable and excited about learning. An authentic and trusting connection can help students feel safe in a classroom, making them more willing to participate and take chances in their learning. This bond not only encourages positive behavior but also creates a sense of belonging, a key tenant of “The Bobcat Way”. This connection also increases student motivation to contribute to a supportive and engaging classroom environment.

Our elementary centers have used Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) for many years, and our Middle School and High School are implementing as well. This is a proactive approach that promotes positive behavior to create a supportive learning environment. PBIS strategies focus on teaching and reinforcing good behavior, rather than just responding to misbehavior. This involves teachers clearly defining and instructing on expectations, consistently recognizing and rewarding positive behavior, and providing interventions when needed. Teachers and students work together to create consistent routines and practices that align to “The Bobcat Way.”

When teachers build strong, trusting relationships with their students, they are better equipped to implement PBIS strategies effectively. These relationships set the tone for each student’s experience at Benton Community.
