Jennifer Drahos, 2nd Grade Teacher, Atkins Elementary
As part of our science curriculum studying plants, second graders in 2D are experimenting with plant propagation. Each student took a cutting from one of our large classroom plants and placed it in a cup of water. We are patiently waiting and observing as our cuttings are starting to sprout new roots. Writing is incorporated into our study as we record our observations weekly.
Initially students were skeptical that this would work. The main question was how a plant would grow without soil. This project is allowing students to use their understanding of plant growth to develop hypotheses and observe natural processes.
Students are excited to see how their plant develops. We will plant our cuttings in soil once they have healthy new roots developed and each student will be able to take their own houseplant home.
