Bobbie Comisky, 6th Grade Math Teacher, Norway Intermedaite
6th grade students have been working hard on reaching mastery of combining like terms to create equivalent algebraic expressions. Before students began to numerically solve these problems, they worked collaboratively to combine like terms through concrete and representational methods. This week in class, 6th grade students worked as a team to identify like terms, physically sort the like terms, and simplify by combining the like terms. Then, recording their problem and solution.
When students work collaboratively in the math classroom, students learn to embrace productive struggle and see challenges as opportunities to learn rather than as a setback. The 6th grade math classroom focuses on student ownership, teamwork, and critical thinking to help support all learners. As a team, students embrace challenges and learn from each other!
