Goal setting is an important skill for students to learn as it helps them to stay focused and motivated. Setting goals gives students a sense of purpose and direction. Goals also provide a way to measure progress and success; it provides a sense of accomplishment when goals are then achieved.

While working with students, I set aside time each week to set goals with them for their reading. We discuss where they are at, where they would like to be, and what they can do to accomplish their goal. Students are able to reflect on their reading during this time. It is a great way to create purpose for why we are doing what we are doing in our intervention time, and it motivates them to do their best. We then reference the goal that they made throughout the week to hold them accountable for it.

Students are then able to share successes when they meet or beat their goal and also share when they didn’t and why and what they can do to get there next time. This discussion includes strategies that they used or that they could use next time and creates ownership of their reading progress. It is the best to see and hear them excited about their goals and learning!
